The ombré hair trend is showing absolutely no signs of fading away anytime soon! Not only are A-listers like Jessica Alba and Lea Michele rocking the sexy, gradated trend, but brands are churning out products to create and cater to the look.
And now you don't even have to go to the salon to score ombré strands thanks to the first-ever at-home kit: L'Oréal Paris Féria Wild Ombré, $13, at drugstores.
The collection consists of three shades that work with natural or color-treated hair: 080 for light to medium blonde hair, 070 for dark blondes to light brown or strawberry red hair, and 060 for medium to dark brown or auburn hair.
We were instantly intrigued by this super cool formula and asked L'Oréal Paris Global Consulting Hair Colorist Christophe Robin for the low-down on how to apply it.
"To get the best results, you're going to want to first detangle your hair so there are zero knots, part it down the middle from your hairline to the nape of your neck, and then push both sides forward," says Robin. "Next, take the thin patented brush we created, with tiny teeth that helps hold and distribute the hair color evenly, and apply the product (that you just squeezed onto it) vertically for a more subtle effect or horizontally for a more intense look, since you cover more hair that way."Advertisement - Continue Reading Below
"Ombré looks good when it's further away from your face, so start a little more than mid-way down the hair shaft in line with your mouth," explains Robin. "However, if you have shorter hair, start more in line with your cheekbones."
Robin also suggests skipping every other section of hair if you're applying it vertically to make it look more dimensional, and covering the hair from mid-shaft down if you're using the brush horizontally.
Regardless of how you choose to apply it, leave it on for 30 to 45 minutes max. "The key is to start checking it from the 20 minute point to make sure you're getting the result you want," says Robin. "So, wipe the color off of a small section to see if it's light enough. If not, cover the strand with the color again and let it continue lightening for a little while longer."
We're big fans of ombré hair here at Cosmopolitan. It's a cool way to incorporate color into your hair and it highlights your face. It's also an instant attention-getter, so be prepared for that guy you have your eye on to approach and compliment you.
