DIY Ombre Nails

Two new DIY nail looks from Lower East Side nail salon Vanity Projects.

DIY nail art is certainly having a moment.

Need proof? Look no farther than your Pinterest feed, which is probably full of DIY polka dots, swirls and the like.Sure, the quotidian look of ombre and zigzag nails have a place, but our motto is bling is always better.

So why not add a splash of sparkle to your manicured mitts?

Our friends at Vanity Projects have put together two DIY looks with Swarovski Elements to add some serious glam to your phalanges, perfect for the lazy days of summer.

LOOK 1: POOL PARTY

Polishes:

  • Dior Basecoat
  • RGB in 'Pool'
  • RGB in 'Minty'
  • Dior Gel Coat

What you'll need:

  • Gold Buillon Beads (available at beauty and beading stores)
  • Swarovski Elements (pick up a set for yourself here)
  • White Acrylic Paint (available at craft stores)
  • Brush-on Nail Glue
  • Orangewood Stick (available at beauty stores)

Apply Dior basecoat. While still wet, add a layer of Pool polish one half of the nail, and Minty on the other.

Blend the middle by using a small amount of polish remover on a brush to create a gradient effect.

Using a thin layer of brush-on nail glue, apply gems to the base of the nail with an orangewood stick, near the cuticle. Use gold bouillon beads at each side of the Swarvoski crystal to give a framed look.

Step 1: Apply Dior basecoat. While still wet, add a layer of Pool polish one half of the nail, and Minty on the other.

Step 2: Blend the middle by using a small amount of polish remover on a brush to create a gradient, ombre effect.

Step 3: Mix a small amount of white acrylic paint with water, using a brush cover a thin layer of paint over the full nail.

Step 4: Use pure white acrylic paint to draw a weblike pattern to give the effect of moving water, like a pool right after you dive in.

Step 5: Using a thin layer of brush-on nail glue, apply gems to the base of the nail with an orangewood stick, near the cuticle. Use gold buillon beads at each side of the Swarovski crystal to give a framed look.

Step 6: Apply a layer of top coat over the nail, making sure the crystals stay put. Wait for it to dry; add a final layer of top coat and let dry.

LOOK 2: CALIFORNIA DREAMING

Polishes:

  • American Apparel Sunshine State
  • Dior Basecoat
  • Dior Gel Coat

What you’ll need:

  • Orangewood Stick
  • Swarovski Elements

Apply two coats of Sunshine State after a layer of base coat.

Apply Swarovski crystals to the base of the nail, near the cuticle, using alternating size crystals to form a triangle pattern.

Step 1: Apply a layer of Dior basecoat.

Step 2: Apply two coats of Sunshine State.

Step 3: Using an orangewood stick, apply Swarovski crystals to the base of the nail, near the cuticle, using alternating size crystals to form a triangle pattern.

Step 4: Apply topcoat over nail, making sure the crystals do not move. Add an extra layer, and you’re ready to glam.
